1950’s

Harvey Goodfriend Harvey Goodfriend, Treasurer (‘55-56) died at home in La Mesa on September 2. Harvey earned a BS in Business Administration (Management) in 1957 and MS in Business Administration from (then) San Diego State College.
While AS Treasurer, Harvey pushed through the very first mandatory student fee in the CSU. In 1961 Harvey returned to SDSU in the full-time position of “Graduate Manager” of Aztec Shops and served in that capacity (with changing titles such as General Manager and CEO) for 38 years until his retirement in 1999. Until 1981, Goodfriend also served as General Manager of the Associated Students. One of his first acts in that capacity was to urge the adoption of a Student Union fee that would later fund Aztec Center, the first student union in the CSU. He taught other campuses how to get it done and there are now student unions on most of the CSU campuses. Under his management, many of the current A.S. programs were conceived and implemented. These include the Mission Bay Aquatic Center and one of the first Children’s Centers on a CSU campus. He also visualized the future Cox Arena with a study titled “New Life in an Old Stadium.”

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 21 at 11 a.m. in the Courtyard of Aztec Center at San Diego State University, under the sycamore tree he loved. Attendees are encouraged to wear Hawaiian attire.

He is survived by his wife, four children and four grandchildren. The family requests that donation can be made to:

Executive Director’s Column – September 08

The Fall semester has begun and the campus is once again awash with bright young eager faces seeking higher education at SDSU! We are blessed with an outstanding group of student leaders who will comprise the 2008/09 AS Council. With increased enrollment over the last several years, the AS Council membership has swollen to 46 voting members consisting of 5 Executive Officers; 24 College Council Representatives; 15 student organization Representatives and 2 non-student voting representatives!

I had the good fortune of traveling to Chicago and South Bend, IN this past weekend with our five student Executive Officers to witness the Aztecs play the University of Notre Dame in football. The experience was very uplifting as it was great to have more than 4,000 Aztec fans in attendance. The experience was all you might imagine…the Notre Dame fans were very welcoming, hospitable and genuinely glad to see us. Although we narrowly missed pulling off a major upset, SDSU represented itself very well as a class-act! I had the opportunity to attend an Alumni Association Pre-game Tailgate Party at the College Football Hall of Fame in downtown South Bend. More than 600 Aztec Alumni and friends attended this sold-out event. The overall quality of the experience was first class and one that made all of us proud to be Aztecs! The team is rebuilding and promises to reverse recent football fortunes. If you get a chance, make plans for your friends or family to take in one of our home games this fall…with all of our help and support…we can be a part of what promises to be a new era of winning Aztec Football.

Go Aztecs!
