Hard Work and Big PlansThis year's Associated Students Executive Officers have big plans to focus on serving student needs with a greater variety of programs and services from AS created through collaboration with the university and outside agencies. ![]() Left to right, 2006-2007 Executive Officers: Tyler Morgan - Vice President of Finance, Khouloud Elmasri - Vice President of External Affairs, John Ly - Vice President of University Affairs, Matt Keipper - President, Brian Hamilton - Executive Vice President The new executive officer team - President Matt Keipper, Executive Vice President Brian Hamilton, Vice President of External Affairs Khouloud Elmasri, Vice President of Finance Tyler Morgan and Vice President of University Affairs John Ly - have been diligently working over the summer to plan for the 2006-07 school year by creating new ways for students to get involved and have more fun! For example, crashing and the stress involved with securing class sections needed for graduation has been a frequent area of concern for SDSU students. President Matt Keipper and Vice President of University Affairs John Ly hope to eliminate that stress by working with Enrollment Services administrators to try and integrate San Diego State's WebPortal system to include class crashing and SDSU Blackboard access. Their hope is to make the WebPortal a one-stop destination for all of a student's academics-related needs. Executive Vice President Brian Hamilton is working with Athletics and other departments on campus to encourage more involvement in all aspects of campus life. One recent event organized for just that reason was the "free trolley ride and football game" event on August 31st. Students who showed their Red ID at the Aztec Center Ticket Office received a free ticket and round-trip San Diego Trolley pass for the first home football game. Before the game, students were given the opportunity to attend a free tailgate party sponsored by Athletics in the stadium parking lot. Hamilton said he hopes his past involvement with many different aspects of campus life will help him in his new position in AS. "When I look back at the end of the year I want to be able to say that I really did everything I could to understand what students needed during their time at SDSU and that I did whatever I could to provide ways for them to get what they needed," Hamilton, 22, said. Vice presidents Khouloud Elmasri and John Ly are looking to better connect San Diego State students to the outside community through AS-organized projects. Elmasri is looking to get more students involved with lobbying for affordable housing near campus. She's also hoping to get a record number of students registered to vote in the upcoming national and local elections. "External affairs is about more than just voting," Elmasri added. "It's about learning about the community and getting involved in projects that will make the lives of all people better - doing things like community service projects, for example." University Affairs Vice President John Ly thinks he may have the way for more students to connect to the community. The Good Neighbor Program, started last year, is being expanded into a community education and service program this fall. Student volunteers, accompanied by a SDSU Community Service Officer, will be out spreading the word on how to be good neighbor to area residents. And finally, who couldn't use some help better managing money? Finance Vice President Tyler Morgan is working on projects designed to continue educating AS-funded groups on how to spend their money more effectively and efficiently. It promises to be a busy year for the AS Council and Executive Officers, but all are hoping that with their many projects come lots of positive results.
