75 Years

AS Celebrates 75 Years

AS celebrated 75 years of student leadership and service to the SDSU Community at a weekend celebration, March 2-3.

More than 200 guests including former and current AS leaders, University leaders and AS staff members attended the Gala reception at the Cox Arena. It was a wonderful opportunity for old friends to catch-up and for those who had been away for awhile to see how much the organization and the campus has grown.

The weekend's events included campus tours given by current AS Council members and open houses at AS facilities including the newly opened Aztec Aquaplex. More than 50 guests enjoyed Hawaiian barbeque and aquatic activities at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center and the weather was perfect for the Saturday afternoon event! The weekend festivities concluded with current and former AS leaders coming together to cheer on the Aztec men's basketball team as they defeated TCU at the Cox Arena.

It proved to be a perfect weekend and it was wonderful to have so many AS Alumni join in the celebration.

Aquaplex

Aztec Aquaplex

AS proudly unveiled its newest campus facility this month: the new $10 million Aztec Aquaplex! This new state-of-the-art facility houses three heated pools: an Olympic 50-meter competition pool for lap swimming and diving; a 7,200 square foot recreation pool and a 20-person hydrotherapy spa.

More than 200 guests joined in the official ribbon-cutting ceremony that took place on Thursday, March 22nd. Since the opening of the Aquaplex on March 1st, there have been in excess of 600 users and guests each day.

If you have not already done so, we encourage you to visit the Aquaplex or checkout its website at:aztecaquaplex.sdsu.edu

Executive Officers

2007-2008 Executive Officers Elected

AS was proud to have its highest voter turnout percentage for a General Election this year. More than 4,400 student voters (13.8%) participated in the 4-day web-hosted voting, March 19-22.All candidates ran exciting campaigns.

The 2007/08 Executive officers and AS Council members will be sworn-in on May 2nd and will begin working on some of their campaign ideas: ensuring students have a voice in SDSU's Master Plan 2007; increasing school spirit; ensuring legislators are aware of and supporting students' issues; and advocating for students' concerns and interests in general.

The 2007/08 AS Executive officers are:

Front row, left to right

From the desk of the Executive Director Dan R. Cornthwaite

Greetings A.S. Alumni!

Yet another academic year has ended with spring Commencement ceremonies taking place in Cox Arena, May 18-20. Our 75th year has been good to us; our future remains bright.

The much-anticipated Aztec Aquaplex opened in March and is an amazing facility that is a giant step forward in our efforts to enhance the quality of student life on campus.

We continue to be blessed with outstanding student leaders. The in-coming executive officers are making plans for 2007/08 which among other student initiatives, will feature major progress in the planning and design of the expansion and renovation of Aztec Center.

The student union expansion will be a critical element and asset in SDSU's plans to increase student enrollment in the next 10-15 years to 35,000 full-time equivalent students (approx. 42,000 head count).

More than ever, the new Aztec Center will need to serve a growing campus as a center of student activity and hub of campus life. Look for more information about this exciting project in future AS Alumni News editions.

Have a great summer!
