Evolve, Enhance, Innovate...
Last spring the SDSU students voted to increase their Student Body Activity Fee by $20 a semester so they could add programs and services. We are very excited that many of them are already underway and very successful! The first annual Greenfest, an evolution of Spring Fiesta and Azfest, will be on the campus of SDSU April 15-17. The three day event will educate the SDSU community on ways to be more eco-friendly in our daily lives and unite the community under the umbrella of Aztec pride. There will be live music, booths and many fun and productive events for students to participate in! This promises to be a great annual tradition that can only grow each year! Next, over 250 applications were received this past fall for the AS Study Abroad Scholarship. This scholarship awards deserving SDSU students who are studying abroad, scholarships between $500 and $1,000 each. The scholarship is awarded in both the fall and spring semesters. The goal is to help fund at minimum 300 students per year. The Aztec Culture Project Committee is meeting on a weekly basis in order to formulate a plan on how to teach the SDSU community a more historically accurate portrayal of the Aztec Culture. The ACP committee is looking at creating curriculum; working with the modern space committee on ways to incorporate Aztec art in the new student union; and, working with University administration to determine locations for placement of an Aztec botanical garden, and art work, including a mural. Student organizations are now able to access more funding for large-scale events through CASE (Cultural Arts and Special Events). The CASE leadership has been instrumental in helping student organizations meet the deadlines to secure funding and help them execute their events very successfully! SDSU students are now able to access free initial Legal and Financial Consultation. If further services are needed, they able to receive them at a reduced cost. This has proven to be a much needed and used service! Finally, AS is reviewing and prioritizing which facilities and programs can start upgrading to more sustainable ways. We are excited for this opportunity!

Susan Heiser joined the staff of Associated Students as a full-time employee on February 1, 1971. By now you may know that Susan will retire after 38 years of service to our organization on February 6, 2009. During her tenure, Susan’s work has had an enormously positive impact on student leaders, full-time and part-time AS employees, campus faculty and staff, children and parents of our Children’s Center, Daily Aztec staff and countless others. The rich legacy of her work includes competent management, strong personal and business ethics, innovation, leadership, impeccable integrity and a zest for life! Her world-wide travels are the things legends are made of. I have had the good fortune of working closely with Susan and serving as her supervisor for the last 26 ½ years (although some would say she has not needed one). Susan was one of the many reasons I was originally drawn to come to work for the Associated Students back in 1982. Even that long ago, Susan had a strong presence among CSU auxiliary managers as a highly competent and innovative professional, a presence I can affirm has continued to this very day. We will miss Susan, but know she will be near by (at least tele-communicatively!) and always ready to lend a helping hand where her assistance is needed. Hope you had a very Happy Holiday and we at AS wish a Prosperous New Year to you and your family! Warm Regards, |
