Year End Overview

Executive Council Members

The Associated Students Government “rocked” in 2007–08, starting the year off with the summer 2007 promotions theme, “Rock Your AS Off”.

The year began with a commitment to “going green”. The AS “Green Love” program created AS–wide eco–friendly standards and added the AS Green Love Sustainability Board to the AS Advisory Board structure.

Other boards which saw great student involvement included the External Affairs Board and University Affairs Board. These boards increased student interest in community service, advocacy, and neighbor relations by creating a number of well publicized events and programs that promoted these efforts. They also teamed up in the fall semester to reach out to the campus community by creating the “Student Resource Center” which provided information about community service, “Fix–the–Fine”, and the Good Neighbor Program.

The Council also dealt with a number of resolutions, sparking campus–wide discussions about the environment, the state budget, and homophobia/transphobia. A student fee referendum was passed which will add an estimated $1.4 million to the annual budget, allowing AS to provide a number of additional and exciting programs and services to the SDSU community, including a campuswide spring festival event!

The year ended with the re-election of incumbent AS President James Poet, who has now become the first two-term President in more than 35-years!

Another academic year has passed, and an eventful year it was! SDSU continues to benefit from an increasingly well–prepared student body and we see evidence of that in the quality and commitment of our student leaders. The 2007/08 accomplishments described in the body of this edition of the AS Alumni Newsletter is further proof!

The successful outcome of the Spring 2008 Student Body Association Fee Referendum will have a significant impact on our ability to provide SDSU students with higher quality services, as well as new services. Beginning this fall, the new fee will begin to fund AS facilities sustainability upgrades; new student legal referral services; increased student organization and campus–wide student programming sponsored by the Cultural Arts & Special Events Board (CASE); funds for an Aztec Culture Project that will increase awareness and understanding of the historical and cultural significance of the University’s Aztec identification; scholarships for SDSU students studying abroad and new funding for a major “green” student festival each spring. Look for more news in upcoming editions about these and other new projects underway at SDSU. Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a great summer!
